Anyone can be a victim of bullying. While growing up, bullying was not rampant
where I came from. But it is a big issue here in the United States. This is
because United States is a melting pot whereby people come different
nationality, race, language, religion and background come together. This is exactly
why it is more likely to happen here.
Coming to the United States and blending with the culture was not too
easy. Being an African with a heavy accent, I experienced people look down on
me and even tease me because of how I speak. This influenced my ability to
speak in public settings. I could not express myself freely and most times, I
will rather remain silent whenever I’m around people that I do not know or
those that look like are not from the same place as myself.
I could not imagine any of my child or loved ones have to deal with bullying.
Bullying from my experience can be the worst thing that happens to anybody and
the effects are long lasting, if not lifelong. Other than direct verbal
bullying, I as a new immigrant witnessed people spreading rumors about me and sever
al accusations. Going to school was difficult but the hardest thing is having
to do group projects and you realize you are the only one who do not fit into
their description of a worthy person.
Often times, I have been addressed as
“this one” and asked to switch groups so they can get someone else who they
think will be better than I am which left me with no option but to find someone
else or even request that I do my own projects all by myself. Nobody deserves
to be bullied and I think anyone who is a bully should be seriously dealt with.
